THE tenants in Burmah Square belonging to Penang Development Corporation (PDC) have been given a reprieve and need not move out by Jan 1 next year, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said based on a meeting with the tenants on Sunday, PDC had decided to give them more time while exploring other options to be taken into consideration.

On Dec 1, the tenants occupying 34 premises in Jalan Chow Thye, Jalan Servis and Jalan Irrawadi in George Town, received notices terminating their tenancy as PDC had plans to develop the land.

They were asked to vacate within a month, which is Jan 1.Some of the units in Burmah Square.

However, after Sunday’s meeting, which included the presence of PDC chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Bazid Abdul Kahar and senior officials, Chow said PDC would soon send new letters to the tenants on their tenancy status.

“PDC informed the tenants that it had just submitted planning permission for the re-development.

“It is not approved yet, and so it is not evicting any of the occupants for now.

“In fact, PDC is open to feedback from the tenants on their own expansion plans and is willing to have more meetings with them for a more effective and amicable solution for both parties.A cosy restaurant within Burmah Square.

“The state is concerned with the interest and welfare of the tenants with a positive approach on PDC’s development plans to optimise the value of its land bank,” Chow said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Bazid said the tenants could be part of the development plan and continue to do their businesses there after the land is re-developed.

Mohd Bazid said every option is on the table and the corporation was willing to look at how best to assist them.

“It is not that we are going to tear down all the buildings in the area as we are also looking into refurbishing them wherever it can be done,” he added.
