THE joint operation codenamed Ops Khazanah headed by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has led to the arrest of 350 wildlife criminals and seizures valued at RM36.11mil.

Its director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim said the arrests were made in 39 operations carried out since September 2019.

“We opened 181 investigation papers after arresting 253 locals and 97 foreigners in our operations across peninsular Malaysia to curb trespassing, illegal logging, forestry theft and illegal poaching.

“We also destroyed 1,425 wildlife traps and seized 28 licensed and homemade firearms from illegal hunters,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference after meeting representatives from agencies involved in the operations at DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Penang in Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

Joining Perhilitan in the operations are the police, state agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Abdul Kadir said they had conducted 11 operations so far, with the 12th ongoing this year.

He said they had opened 69 investigations papers and seized items worth RM31.86mil this year.Abdul Kadir: We don’t want Malaysia to be a transit point for smuggling.

He added that out of the 127 people arrested this year, 117 were locals while the others were from Cambodia (5), Myanmar (2), Pakistan (1), Thailand (1) and Indonesia (1).

“Besides destroying 293 wildlife traps on the field, we also detected 56 illegal foreign camps in forest reserves and national parks.

“We also discovered 19 illegal logging sites and recorded 2,352 illegal hunting and trespassing cases,” he said.

Abdul Kadir said they had been strengthened by the BP3 (Biodiversity Protection and Patrolling Programme) involving some 600 rangers comprising army veterans, Orang Asli and personnel from enforcement agencies.

He said Johor and Pahang recorded the highest number of cases, especially on ivory and wildlife trafficking involving birds, amphibians and reptiles.

“Pangolins from Indonesia were brought in and smuggled out to Vietnam or China.

“Last year itself, about two tonnes of pangolins were seized.

“We don’t want Malaysia to be turned into a transit point for smuggling,” he said, adding that the syndicate masterminds had been identified and were being tracked down by the task force.
